If a horse arrives at Belmont having won the Derby and the Preakness, this is the race the whole sport watches, because the Belmont's punishing distance is exactly where tired legs give out. Even without a Crown on the line, it is New York racing at its grandest, on the doorstep of the biggest city in the country.
For 2027 there is good news: after a full rebuild, Belmont Park reopens, so the Belmont Stakes returns home to Elmont from its recent stints at Saratoga, in a brand-new facility. And New York being an hour away means the trip can be as much city as track.
