The problem nobody explains
You have to book the trip before you know whether your team is in it. That single fact drives every decision about a Final Four, and almost nobody lays it out honestly.
The public ticket lottery for 2027 closed on May 31, 2026, before last season's tournament was even played. Winners are notified in the fall of 2026, roughly ten months before anyone knows which four teams are playing. Entrants commit $400 per strip up front, plus a $25 application fee that is not refunded whether you win or lose. Then, once the Elite Eight ends, there are about six days before tip-off. That is the entire window in which a fan whose team just made it can find flights and a downtown hotel room in a city that is already full.
Ticket mechanics confirmed as of July 2026.
What we do about it
There are two honest paths and they are different trips. If you want to be in the building regardless of who plays, you book early and you accept you may watch two teams you have no stake in. If you are following one team, you are planning for a six-day scramble, which means holding the right rooms on the right terms well before Selection Sunday and knowing what to release. Which of those you are is the first question worth answering, and it is the first thing we ask.
What a package includes
Packages start at $1,495 per person, based on four guests sharing a room. Fewer people to a room costs more per person, and we quote that honestly. The starting package includes four nights at the Hollywood Casino Detroit Greektown, a four block walk from Ford Field, 300 level seats to both semifinals on Saturday and the championship on Monday, admission to the Final Four Fan Fest, private round trip transfers from Detroit airport, and all taxes. Airfare is not included. The deposit is $350 per person.
Detroit, specifically
Downtown has roughly 6,000 hotel rooms today, up from about 2,000 the last time Detroit hosted in 2009, with more than 1,600 arriving before 2027. That sounds like plenty until you know that a Final Four draws around 70,000 visitors. Michigan State is the host institution, so there is a live possibility the Spartans, or Michigan, play in the Final Four they are hosting. If that happens, the local market tightens far beyond what national averages would suggest. That is worth planning for now rather than discovering in March.
