The Home Run Derby is Monday, July 12. The All-Star Game is Tuesday, July 13. Wrigley last hosted in 1990, and before that 1962 and 1947. It is a small ballpark hosting a very large event, in a neighborhood that was not designed for it, in July.

Voting for the All-Star Game does not get you into it

This is the single most common misunderstanding and it repeats every year. Casting a ballot for the rosters typically earns you an access code for a discounted ticket to an unrelated regular season game. It is not a path to an All-Star Game seat. Meanwhile, host club season ticket holders get first call on the tickets that matter, which is why an out-of-market fan can find nothing available and no explanation of why.

All-Star Week is four events, not one

FanFest, the Futures Game, the Home Run Derby, and the game itself are separate tickets on separate days with separate demand. People bundle them together in their heads and then build a trip that misses half of it. Deciding which days you actually care about is the first real decision, and it determines where you should stay.
